One of our First Year students has been speaking of the importance of taking advantage of the opportunities available and gaining valuable experience in the sports industry alongside studies at UCFB.

Libby McElhinney, a BA (Hons) Football Business and Media student, has taken on a role at VAVEL, writing for the WSL office, which has seen her attending press conferences and interviewing WSL managers.

She said: “Starting my new role as a sports writer for VAVEL has given me invaluable experience in the media industry.

“I received the opportunity to attend an Arsenal and Tottenham press conference. Although anxious at first, the experience is not only exciting but also a great experience to see behind the scenes in the media industry.

“Being able to ask questions in both conferences was also a great experience, as we had explored interviewing technique in my media modules.

“Going into these conferences with some preparation and question ideas really aided my coursework and general media experience.”

She added, talking about her time studying at UCFB:  “I am thoroughly enjoying my time at UCFB and with the end of first year quickly approaching, I feel I have made great progress and explored my opportunities thoroughly.

“I have the lecturers to thank for equipping me with the media skills needed for this role, and I look forward to taking on even more opportunities in my second year.”

She finished: “Take everything offered to you. The extra sessions and guest speakers on JobTeaser are immensely useful to the courses and industry experience.

“This writing experience has helped me grow in journalism and I am grateful that there are start-up roles like these that are available without much experience.

“If roles like this are advertised my biggest advice would be to apply for them - if you don’t apply then you will never know.”
