Along with several other GIS graduates, Jake Toyer, a graduate of the MSc Football Coaching & Analysis programme, spoke at an exclusive GIS alumni event, showcasing the unique Master’s degrees on offer and the unparalleled work experience and graduate opportunities.

Here, he shares what he discussed at the event and what he learnt from other GIS alumni…

Over the last week I have been speaking at the GIS Alumni events at both the Etihad and Wembley Campus’.

Both of the groups were attentive and engaging at the venues. Asking some insightful questions to the different speakers on the day based on their experiences. The events were designed to educate undergraduate students about GIS and the differing experiences that previous students have had over the past years. There was a variety of different speakers at the events ranging from academy analysts to first team coaching staff. We were able to share experiences from our time with GIS as well as our current roles in the football industry at the moment.

The speakers gave details about their time on the course and the different learning points that they took as well as how their GIS experience was able to benefit them in their roles today. Alongside this, they provided further recommendations for the undergraduates if they choose to embark on their own post-graduate experience.

The questions after the speeches were engaging and very open for the speakers to give their expertise and advice. Some of the key takes from the perspective of the speakers, including myself, was to enjoy a very unique experience, engage and utilise each other’s networks and strive to get the best from the course in the classroom and away from it.

Overall both of the events were a great example of who GIS are and the benefits of going on a post-graduate course. The speakers and the students both engaged with each other away from the lectures, which was a positive example of the success of the students from GIS.
