Postgraduate UCFB students learned about career opportunities in baseball on visit to MLB Europe

Several UCFB students were fortunate enough to find out about career opportunities in the baseball industry on a trip to Major League Baseball Europe.

While visiting the London-based offices of MLB Europe, students from UCFB’s postgraduate sports industry-focused degree courses learned about baseball, its magnitude within the United States, as well as its growth across Europe.

The students were able to meet and network with Ben Ladkin, managing director at MLB Europe.

Ben spoke to the students about how Major League Baseball’s desire to grow the sport in the UK at all levels is allowing for a range of career opportunities.

“There’s a real challenge here, which is how you make a unique sport over here more popular. That means we’ve got to be creative, do things differently and take influences from wherever we see other sports doing well.”

He added, talking about how important passion and knowledge is, both within sport and the subject matter of careers within sport.

“One of the pieces we’ve discussed,” he said, “is being an expert in your field, as well as the sport. So, if you’re working in social media, or marketing.

“Having the good knowledge of that and layering it out across the sport you’re working in is crucial.

“And if you manage great people and great teams, you get that output. It’s about building teams around you which have that knowledge, passion and enthusiasm for not just the sport, but the subject matter too.”
