A group of UCFB students from both UK campuses gained some fantastic experience in SW19, working as broadcast assistants at the Wimbledon Tennis Championships.

Jack, Nicole and Sean, three BA (Hons) Sports Business and Sports Broadcasting students at our Wembley Campus, along with Manchester-based BA (Hons) Multimedia Sports Journalism student Lucy, were fortunate enough to work at the tournament.

Nicole, Sean and Lucy were three broadcast assistants at the championships, whereas Jack, who impressed as a broadcast assistant at last year’s Wimbledon, was asked to come back as one of three broadcast team leaders.

Their duties at Wimbledon included chaperoning broadcasters to ensure they are working within their regulations and ensuring that each broadcast rights holder are meeting their agreements in terms of access and filming positions during matches.

Meanwhile, broadcast assistants are also on hand for any administrative tasks and answering questions from camera crews around access and filming locations.

Jack said: “For myself personally, a huge takeaway from completing both roles as assistant and team leader is the communication side of it.

“You’re working within a team of 25-30 people and it’s really important to communicate and ensure that everyone is enforcing all of the same rules.

“Another one, mainly from a broadcasting standpoint, is that you have to ensure that all rights holders are following their strict rules. For example with Wimbledon, ESPN have more access than most other broadcasters.”

He added: “Wimbledon is such an amazing event. It is amazing to be involved in such a prestigious tournament as you meet so many people and interact with lots of different roles and get to see the full production of one of the world’s greatest shows from behind the scenes!”

He finished: “Take every opportunity and apply for something a little different. Before last year’s tournament I had never even thought about working in tennis. These sorts of roles are always out there, so keep looking and take risks!”
