A UCFB graduate is celebrating having recently secured her first role in the sports industry, working as a football officiating specialist at Stockley Park.

Working with Genius Sports, Celia Huggett is assisting video assistant referees with semi-automated offside software, only a month after graduating from a UCFB postgraduate degree in MSc Performance Analysis in Football.

“It's early days, but so far, I love doing my job,” she said. “Every match is different, so I'm always learning, but it's nice seeing how I can contribute to the efficiency of the game.

“It has always been my ambition to work in football, and now I'm doing it—I have to pinch myself.”

Previously, Celia spent more than 30 years in the education industry before following a core passion and moving to a career in the sports industry.

While working in numerous education roles from assistant headteacher to governor, she also coached girls’ football teams, not only developing their skill, but also fostering a positive and inclusive environment.

“I actively encourage girls to attend both men’s and women’s live football matches,” Celia said. “By doing so, they learn from watching players and experience the excitement of live football.

“This also helps to normalise their presence in what can often be male-dominated environments, reducing any apprehension they might feel.”

In addition to his, Celia also gained her coaching deaf footballers qualification, in an effort allow even more people to access football coaching.

Speaking about her time at UCFB, Celia said: “Choosing to study at UCFB was a deliberate decision. While many other institutions offer generic sport analysis courses, UCFB’s targeted approach towards football particularly stood out.

“The curriculum, resources, and industry connections were all geared towards providing an in-depth understanding and expertise in football.”

She added: “UCFB’s large network of industry experts and enrichment opportunities were also attractive, such as workshops with the PGMOL and Women in Football.

“I was also fortunate enough to travel to Baltimore and complete an internship at Baltimore Orioles MLB set up by UCFB.”

Celia then went on to speak about whether she would encourage undergraduate UCFB students to further their sports industry education with a postgraduate degree.

“I’d encourage undergraduate students to consider postgraduate study with UCFB if they are passionate about pursuing a career in the sports industry.

“UCFB has strong connections with industry leaders and organisations. This network is important to postgraduate students, providing opportunities for internships, networking, and potentially job placements within the sports sector.

“As a mature female student, I really felt that UCFB offered an inclusive and comfortable environment.”

She finished: “The sports industry is a huge employer, not just in the UK but also globally.

“Whether you’re interested in grassroots development or aiming to work with elite professional teams, exploring various roles can help you find your niche and build a fulfilling career in the sports industry.”
