A UCFB lecturer was recently interviewed on his views around the upcoming summer transfer deadline day and the impact of rules and regulations on how clubs act in transfer windows.

UCFB academic Professor Rob Wilson spoke to BBC News on the topic of the summer 2024 transfer deadline day.

He argued that the slow movement in the 2024 summer transfer window has been down to a number of factors.

“It’s been remarkably slow,” he said. “But actually, it’s the culmination of a couple of transfer windows where everything’s been slowing down because of profit and sustainability rates, the charges we saw at clubs last season and the way the clubs are now battling to balance their profit and loss accounts and balance sheets.”

He added that recent charges and point deductions to clubs has impacted the way other clubs have acted in the transfer window.

“When financial fair play was first introduced, profit and sustainability rules, we were expecting to see a slowing down, or certainly more control, so players out for players to come in. We haven’t really seen that over the last few seasons.

“But I think those regulations are starting to hit home. With those penalties for Everton and Nottingham Forest last season, clubs will be much more cautious in the market. And, of course, there’ll be a change next year when they go to a squad-cost ratio.”
