A UCFB media student has been gaining invaluable sports industry experience as part of the media team at a National League club.

Will Beaman, who studies BA (Hons) Multimedia Sports Journalism at UCFB Wembley, has been working within the media team at Ruislip-based Wealdstone FC.

When asked about his role at Wealdstone, he said: “On a matchday, we’ll begin the day by welcoming fans on social media and creating content during the warm-ups and capturing the pre-match atmosphere.

“During the game I will either be writing the match report or providing a live matchday Twitter feed. Both roles are usually rotated between myself and the rest of the team. Then after the game, I’ll conduct an interview with either the manager or a player.”

He added: “Travelling the country to cover football matches is something I really enjoy, and having been at the club for a year and a half, I’ve covered around 50 games in a number of different stadia across the country, whilst being able to improve my skills as a journalist.”

When asked about his time at UCFB, he said:  I liked how my degree set me up with the perfect foundations for going into the industry, as a student I was taught worthwhile skills that I still use on a day-to-day basis in my working life.

“On top of that, I was always grateful for how accessible the lectures and support teams were in aiding my studies or just for any general advice.

“I got the Wealdstone role through UCFB’s job website, JobTeaser, and the university has always been on hand to assist with any issues or queries I’ve had about the placement, especially when starting out at the club..”

He finished: “Go for it. There’s no better time to put yourself into the working world than when you’re still a student. Being able put your knowledge and experiences into the industry is so important. The earlier you start the more comfortable you’ll feel when you’re looking for work as a graduate.”
