A UCFB graduate has been telling us about the pride he feels having been employed by the club he supports.

Callum Irving, who studied BA (Hons) Football Business and Media at UCFB Manchester, is now media and communications executive and Oldham Athletic Community Trust.

As part of his role, Callum runs the trust’s social media accounts, as well as organising player visits to schools and hospitals within the Oldham community.

When asked what the best thing about working in football is, Callum said: “Being around the players and the being around the environment.

“It’s really exciting, being in football. If you love football, you just can’t beat it.

“For me, being at Oldham Athletic; It’s my team, it’s my club. It’s that pure love for being here all the time.

“It’s simply the people. Being part of the community trust, we’re always out in the town and working with a lot of the fans. Just being around the people with a love for the team.”

He added: “My current role came about through my connections at UCFB.

“I did a lot of volunteering, including an internship at the Manchester FA. Through my network there, I got to know people here, and through opportunities which arose, I managed to gain this position.”

When asked about his time at university, Callum said: “Without UCFB, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

“I think the best thing about UCFB is the connections you make in the industry. I met people such as the CEO of the Manchester FA, and that led to so many opportunities.

“In the football industry, it’s really important that you go out and learn the industry first-hand.”

He finished: “Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and give new things a try, because the skills from the degrees at UCFB are so transferable.”
