A brief history

Traded between Spain, Britain and then the US, Miami started to become the important tourist destination it is today in the early 20th century as people began to discover its year-round climate and idyllic coastline. This is when the building boom started and the rich and famous began moving into the area, first in spectacular mansions and later the art deco architecture found near South Beach. The 21st century has seen Miami become one of, if not the, world’s key cruise destinations, serving over 20 cruise companies and 60 different passenger ships.

Things to do

Do you prefer going to the beach or shopping? Maybe you’re a history buff? Unsurprisingly, Miami caters for all. Downtown Miami is known for its collection of both historic and modern buildings, and Little Havana is famed for its Latin galleries and bustling restaurants. Head over to Miami Beach to experience the glamour this city is famed for: Ocean Drive, South Beach, the historic Art Deco district – just remember your sun cream.

Sport in Miami

Dolphins, Heat, Marlins, Panthers and now Inter Miami. One thing Miami isn’t short of is elite sports franchises playing in North America’s leading leagues. Miami will be a host city for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be played in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

Food and drink

Given Miami’s European links and strong ties to Latin culture, good food is just around the corner in this city. Think flavour, think fresh, think filling. Empandas, Cuban sandwiches, Key lime pie, incredible sea food and alligator – whether it’s a street vendor or fine dining, all of this and more makes Miami a gastronomical delight.
